Why Weekends Felt Longer Growing Up: A Generation X Reflection

July 06, 20261 min read

Does anybody else remember when weekends used to feel longer?

Back when Friday night seemed like the beginning of an adventure and Sunday evening felt like it was a million miles away?

As kids, summer weekends were endless.

You'd wake up with absolutely no plan.
You'd spend the day outside.
Maybe ride your bike.
Maybe watch cartoons.
Maybe just hang out with friends and somehow stay busy all day.

And then somehow, magically, there was still tomorrow.

Fast forward a few decades, and it seems like Friday arrives and Monday is already knocking on the door.

It's funny how our perspective changes.

But one thing I've come to appreciate is that the best weekends usually aren't the ones packed with activities.

They're the simple ones.
Sleeping in a little.
Enjoying a good meal.
Laughing with my family.
Watching a movie.
Having nowhere important to be.
Getting caught up on things around the house.
Or just sitting quietly with a cup of coffee and being thankful for another day.

Maybe that's one of the gifts that comes with getting older.

You begin to realize that ordinary moments aren't really ordinary at all.

They're the moments that become memories.

Hope everyone has had a wonderful Fourth of July weekend.

And for my fellow Gen Xers...

Does anybody else still feel a little disappointed when Sunday night rolls around and you realize tomorrow is Monday? 😄
